SHREWSBURY, Mass. — In a significant move aimed at strengthening domestic manufacturing and improving customer responsiveness, PI (Physik Instrumente), a global leader in high-precision motion control and nanopositioning systems, has announced progress on its new U.S. production facility in Shrewsbury, Massachusetts.
The 140,000-square-foot facility is set to open in Fall 2025 and will triple the company’s current manufacturing space across New England.
The expansion is part of a broader strategy to bring production closer to key U.S. markets while addressing ongoing challenges posed by international trade tariffs.
“By localizing production, PI is aiming to reduce supply chain risks, lower costs associated with import duties, and improve delivery lead times for American clients,” the company said. The new plant will manufacture core technologies such as automation systems, air bearings, piezoelectric transducers, and nanopositioning components—products vital to industries including semiconductors, photonics, aerospace, and medical devices.
Construction of the facility began in early 2024, with operations expected to launch by Fall 2025. In addition to manufacturing capabilities, the site will serve as a hub for research and innovation, focusing on the development of next-generation motion control solutions.
The project is expected to generate numerous high-tech jobs, contributing to the economic vitality of the greater Boston area. By clustering engineering and production teams under one roof, PI aims to foster collaboration and attract top talent to the region’s already-thriving advanced manufacturing ecosystem.
“This new facility is a major investment in the North American market and a reflection of our long-term commitment to U.S. customers,” the company added.
With this expansion, PI joins a growing number of global manufacturers shifting operations stateside in response to geopolitical uncertainties and evolving customer expectations for faster, more localized support.
