NEWTON, Mass. – The RMR Group (Nasdaq: RMR) has released its 2024 Sustainability Report, titled “Value Built on Sustainability,” highlighting significant strides in environmental, social, and governance (ESG) performance.
The report outlines the company’s progress in embedding sustainable practices across its national portfolio, which includes properties managed for several major clients such as Service Properties Trust (Nasdaq: SVC), Diversified Healthcare Trust (Nasdaq: DHC), and Sonesta International Hotels Corporation.
Among the most notable achievements in the report is RMR’s early surpassing of two key environmental targets. The company exceeded its goal of diverting 50% of waste from landfills—one full year ahead of schedule. In addition, 53.1% of RMR-managed square footage has now been certified through the Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) program, four years ahead of the company’s 2028 target.
“At RMR, sustainability is important to building value for our clients through both higher tenant and resident satisfaction and lower operating costs,” said John Forester, Vice President of Energy & Sustainability at RMR. “We remain on track to meet or exceed our emissions, energy, and water targets.”
Forester also emphasized the role of technology in RMR’s sustainability success: “RMR increasingly benefits from collaboration between our technology and sustainability functions, enabling us to advance our Connected Buildings platform. This innovation centralizes real-time energy analytics and allows our engineers to manage building systems remotely, improving efficiency across our portfolio.”
The report further highlights RMR’s leadership in navigating emerging climate-related regulations. By leveraging its expertise in Building Performance Standards, the company has helped clients reduce operating expenses while staying ahead of policy risks.
Beyond environmental metrics, RMR received recognition for its workplace culture and property management standards. It was named one of GlobeSt.com’s 2024 Best Places to Work in Commercial Real Estate and currently holds the second-highest number of BOMA 360 designations among all property managers.
“Our continued momentum is a testament to our team’s dedication and our long-term commitment to responsible management,” Forester said.
