NEWTON, Mass. — Chapman Construction/Design has been selected to oversee the construction of Akebia Therapeutics’ new headquarters at the 180 CityPoint life sciences campus in Waltham, a 43,000-square-foot project that will combine office and laboratory space across two floors.

Chapman will work directly with property owner BXP to deliver the new headquarters ahead of Akebia’s planned relocation from Cambridge in 2026. Akebia Therapeutics, which develops and commercializes treatments for kidney disease, is expected to move into the new space following the expiration of its current headquarters lease in September 2026.

The project will include approximately 28,518 square feet of office space and 14,956 square feet of laboratory facilities designed to support Akebia’s scientific and operational needs.

Officials said Chapman was selected for the assignment based on its expertise in corporate interiors, laboratory construction and fast-track project delivery.

“Chapman’s experience with corporate, laboratory and fast-track construction all played a role in its selection to oversee the project,” the company said in its announcement.

The headquarters build-out will feature specialty lighting, glass office fronts, custom laboratory millwork and glazing, as well as advanced scientific infrastructure. Planned laboratory systems include fume hoods, a tepid water system integrated into the building’s existing infrastructure, lab vacuum systems, and dedicated carbon dioxide and nitrogen systems, along with supporting mechanical components.

The project is expected to be completed over a 26-week construction schedule and will be delivered in two phases, with office areas scheduled for completion before the laboratory space.

Chapman will collaborate with architecture and design firm Stantec to coordinate construction and ensure the project remains on schedule.

BXP, formerly known as Boston Properties, is the largest publicly traded developer, owner and manager of Class A office properties in the United States and continues to expand its presence in Greater Boston’s growing life sciences sector.

Located in Waltham, 180 CityPoint is part of the broader CityPoint mixed-use campus, which has become an increasingly active destination for biotechnology and life sciences companies seeking modern laboratory and office space outside Cambridge’s urban core.
