BOSTON – Shawmut Design and Construction participated in the 2019 Pan-Mass Challenge, marking the twelfth straight year the firm has participated in the two-day bike-a-thon.

This year, Team Shawmut raised $230,000 and counting, accumulating more than $1,500,000 in total fundraising since the team’s inception. The money raised will directly support the research being conducted by Dana-Farber’s Dr. Christopher Sweeney, who rode with Team Shawmut for the sixth consecutive year.

Team Shawmut 2019 consisted of 38 riders, the most of any Shawmut team in history, including CEO Les Hiscoe, Dr. Sweeney, and three of his patients. The team rode from Sturbridge to Provincetown to increase awareness and funding for cancer research and patient care at Dana-Farber Cancer Institute. As they have done in previous years, Shawmut sponsored the Brewster PMC water stop and staffed it with more than 35 Shawmut volunteers, made up of employees, family, and friends.

“The PMC has always been a special event for the Shawmut team, and we were so inspired to participate for the twelfth year in a row,” said Jim Scarpone, director at Shawmut and Team Shawmut captain. “With this being our largest team yet, it is amazing to see the continued growth and commitment from our company — including the volunteers who dedicate their time and effort at the Brewster water stop — embracing the Shawmut mission and culture by creating a community that provides support for our employees, family, and friends who are affected by cancer in one way or another.”

Team Shawmut has consistently raised more than $100,000 a year to support Dr. Sweeney’s efforts, enabling him to create a unique database of cancer specimens that allows his team to find the key causes of incurable cancer, and to test a new drug designed to make standard therapies more effective.
