Public-private partnership led by MassDevelopment and M&T Bank to support JazzUrbane Cafe and create 26 jobs in Roxbury

BOSTON — A new jazz club and restaurant is set to open in Nubian Square following a $2.46 million financing package assembled through a partnership of public, private, and philanthropic organizations.

MassDevelopment, M&T Bank, the City of Boston, and The Boston Foundation are backing Jazz Urbane Cafe LLC, which plans to launch a national jazz club and dining venue in Roxbury.

The financing package includes a $380,000 equipment loan from MassDevelopment, a $1.63 million loan from M&T Bank, $450,000 in credit enhancement from the City of Boston, and a guarantee from The Boston Foundation. The project is expected to create 26 full-time jobs.

JazzUrbane Cafe will occupy approximately 8,000 square feet on the first floor of the city-owned Bruce C. Bolling Building at 2300 Washington Street, a prominent site in the heart of Nubian Square.

State and local leaders said the project reflects a broader effort to invest in cultural and economic development in Boston neighborhoods. Eric Paley, who serves as chair of MassDevelopment’s board, said the initiative demonstrates the impact of collaboration across sectors and will help expand access to live music while strengthening the area’s artistic identity.

Michelle Wu highlighted the role of small businesses in shaping neighborhood vitality, describing the project as a new hub for music, economic opportunity, and community in Roxbury.

MassDevelopment President and CEO Navjeet Bal said the agency is supporting the project as part of its mission to bring increased economic activity and cultural programming to Nubian Square.

Leaders from M&T Bank and The Boston Foundation also emphasized the importance of the partnership in fostering community growth. Jeff Carpenter, interim president of M&T Bank in Massachusetts, said the investment will help create a vibrant space for both artists and residents, while Orlando Watkins of The Boston Foundation noted the project aligns with broader efforts to integrate arts, business, and community development in Boston’s urban core.

JazzUrbane Cafe is envisioned as a destination for both local and national performers, blending live music with dining to celebrate diverse cultural traditions. Arts Director Bill Banfield said the venue aims to serve as a central gathering place that supports artistic expression and community engagement.

The project is expected to add a new cultural anchor to Nubian Square, contributing to ongoing efforts to revitalize Roxbury’s commercial and cultural district.
