Boston— City Realty Group has partnered with the Urban League of Eastern Massachusetts to launch a workforce development program aimed at helping single mothers obtain real estate licenses at no cost.
The initiative, known as the Real Estate Program for Single Mothers, provides participants with free training, childcare, and access to career pathways in the real estate industry. The program recently completed its first pilot cohort, with participants attending classes five days a week at City Realty Group’s Boston office.
The program was developed by Josh Kraft, board chair of the Urban League of Eastern Massachusetts, and Rahsaan Hall, the organization’s president and CEO. It is intended to address financial barriers that can prevent single mothers from enrolling in real estate licensing courses.
Participants receive instruction designed to prepare them for the Massachusetts real estate licensing exam, along with exposure to industry practices through hands-on learning. The program also includes mentorship opportunities and guest speakers.
Tatiana Fridkes, one of four participants in the pilot cohort, said the program provided an opportunity to pursue a new career despite financial constraints. Another participant, Cierra Conway, said the program combined classroom instruction with practical experience, allowing participants to better understand the field.
Stephanie Barbosa, a former Boston Public Schools educator, said she joined the program after being laid off during the COVID-19 pandemic and spending several years out of the workforce. She said the training offered a potential path toward financial stability.
In addition to tuition-free instruction, the program provides childcare during the month-long course to support participants balancing work and family responsibilities.
Stephen Whalen, managing partner of City Realty Group, said the program is intended to expand access to careers that can support long-term financial independence.
The organizations have not yet announced a timeline for future cohorts.
