SHREWSBURY, Mass. — A Worcester-based developer is proposing a major mixed-use redevelopment that would bring up to 250 housing units to the site of the former Tanela Restaurant and Golden Star Motel, according to a report by the Worcester Business Journal.
GoVenture Capital Group has submitted plans to demolish the long-vacant buildings at 525 Hartford Turnpike, a property that has remained unused for more than a decade, WBJ reported. In their place, the developer is seeking approval to construct a 12,000-square-foot commercial and retail building along with two five-story residential buildings totaling up to 250 units.
The proposal also includes infrastructure improvements, notably a new access road connecting Route 20 to Stoney Hill Road behind the property. According to WBJ, the developer has been working with state and local officials on traffic considerations, including the potential signalization of the new intersection.
GoVenture Capital Group submitted its full proposal and a request for a special permit in December, WBJ reported. The Shrewsbury Planning Board has since held public hearings on the project in January and February, where representatives presented site design and planning details. A planned March presentation was postponed at the developer’s request and is now scheduled for April 2, according to WBJ.
Founded in 2018, GoVenture Capital Group has overseen more than $450 million in development, financing, and construction projects. The firm has previously proposed a $17 million, 364-unit apartment development on Franklin Street in Worcester, as well as the conversion of the historic Taylor and Farley Organ Co. building into residential units, WBJ reported.
If approved, the Shrewsbury project would transform a long-dormant site into a significant new housing and commercial hub along one of the region’s major corridors.
