BOSTON – The Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) announced $33.6 million in direct assistance grants to 166 fire departments nationwide through the agency’s Fiscal Year (FY) 2018 Assistance to Firefighters Grant (AFG) program. Additional phases will soon be announced.
The Lee Fire Department will receive $224,696 from FEMA for an Assistance to Firefighters Grant (AFG). The grant will be used to purchase twenty-four breathing apparatuses for Lee’s firefighters, and ten automatic cardiac defibrillators.
Today’s announcement includes Assistance to Firefighters Grants to the following fire departments in Massachusetts:
- Bedford, MA – Federal share of $ 9,143 for Mass Casualty – Active Shooter training.
- Onset Fire District, Wareham, MA – Federal share of $ 21,320 for mobile and portable radios.
- Truro, MA – Federal share of $ 28,515 for thermal imaging cameras.
- Marblehead, MA – Federal share of $ 36,190 for diesel exhaust systems in 2 fire stations.
- Hyannis Fire District, Barnstable, MA – Federal share of $ 50,857 for a firefighter wellness & fitness program.
- Hyannis Fire District, Barnstable, MA – Federal share of $128,605 – A regional grant award with 20 Cape Cod fire departments for Firefighter Safety and Survival training.
- Somerset, MA – Federal share of $ 53,121 for firefighter personal escape devices and firefighter safety and survival training.
- Stoughton, MA – Federal share of $ 58,514 for Mass Casualty – Active Shooter training.
- West Bridgewater, MA – Federal share of $ 64,076 for a fire station diesel exhaust system.
- Somerville, MA – Federal share of $ 77,047 for Mass Casualty – Active Shooter training.
- Canton, MA– Federal share of $ 85,718 for firefighter safety and survival training.
- Medway, MA – Federal share of $ 95,238 for a fire sprinkler system at fire station 1.
- Brookline, MA– Federal share of $ 146,327 for Fire Instructor training.
- Wilbraham, MA – Federal share of $ 155,057 for 22 firefighter breathing apparatus and 3 breathing apparatus face pieces.
- Hingham, MA – Federal share of $ 172,646 – A regional grant with Norwell, Hull, Cohasset, Scituate for Emergency Vehicle Operator training.
- Lee MA – Federal share of $ 224,696 for 24 firefighter breathing apparatus and 10 automatic cardiac defibrillators.
- Amesbury, MA – Federal share of $ 227,316 – A regional grant with Salisbury MA for Emergency Vehicle Operator training and Firefighter safety training.
- Boston, MA – Federal share of $ 704,510 for wellness & fitness activities – firefighter cancer screening program.
The primary goal of the Assistance to Firefighters Grant (AFG) is to meet the firefighting and emergency response needs of fire departments and nonaffiliated emergency medical service organizations. Since 2001, AFG has helped firefighters and other first responders obtain critically needed equipment, protective gear, emergency vehicles, training and other resources necessary for protecting the public and emergency personnel from fire and related hazards.
This grant is funded through FEMA’s Assistance to Firefighters Grant (AFG) program. Eligible applicants include local fire departments, fire districts, nonaffiliated EMS organizations, tribal fire departments and State Fire Training Academies. The grant applications are submitted from each agency directly to FEMA, where the applications are reviewed and scored by fire service personnel from throughout the nation.
FEMA obligates funding for this project directly to the recipient agencies. It is the recipient agency’s responsibility to manage their grant award within federal guidelines with technical assistance and monitoring provided by FEMA Fire Program Specialists.
