BOSTON– Kripper Studio has partnered with Boston University (BU) on a trio of design improvement projects that span multiple departments across the Charles River Campus. The initiatives focus on reimagining interior spaces, upgrading technology, and aligning existing facilities with modern academic and residential needs.

The projects, which include renovations to office spaces, a screening room, and student residences, reflect a shared commitment by BU and Kripper Studio to enhance the utility and experience of existing campus structures—both historic and new.

“Working with Boston University as it reassesses current needs offers us the chance to also anticipate and prepare for the future,” said Amir Kripper, Founding Principal of Kripper Studio. “There’s a deep value in what has already been built, and our goal is to leverage that foundation to create flexible, efficient spaces for years to come.”

The three projects underway are:

640 Commonwealth Avenue – College of Communication, Screening Room

Housed in a building constructed in 1912, BU’s main screening room—last renovated in 1988—will undergo a full interior upgrade. Enhancements will include improved aesthetics, ADA compliance, and greater programming flexibility. Key updates include:

  • Replacement of ceiling tiles, sub-structure, carpeting, wall finishes, lighting, and seating

  • Installation of a new movable podium and adaptable lighting

  • Preservation of existing AV and sound equipment

  • Doors to remain, with refreshed paint and primer

Construction timelines will be announced shortly.

665 Commonwealth Avenue – Department of Computer Science

In BU’s modern high-rise completed in 2022, Kripper Studio will reconfigure open meeting areas on floors 13 through 16 into dedicated workspaces. The project marks the first interior adaptation of this building to accommodate evolving departmental needs.

Construction start dates are forthcoming.

113 Bay State Road – Student Residences

Inside a 1905 brownstone, previously configured as six separate student residences, Kripper Studio will transform the top two vacant floors into full-floor student apartments. Work is scheduled to begin this summer, with completion anticipated by fall.

Each project exemplifies a targeted, thoughtful approach to university infrastructure—balancing heritage with innovation and aligning space with the needs of BU’s academic community.
