CAMBRIDGE, Mass. — The Cambridge Housing Authority (CHA) has acquired two historic residential buildings on Massachusetts Avenue in a major step toward expanding affordable housing opportunities in Cambridge.
The purchase includes 1648 and 1654 Massachusetts Avenue, two six-story apartment buildings located between Harvard Square and Porter Square. Together, the properties contain 79 one- and two-bedroom apartments, along with two commercial units, situated on a 17,658-square-foot parcel in one of the city’s most transit-accessible neighborhoods.
The acquisition was made possible through support from the City of Cambridge Affordable Housing Trust and reflects a broader partnership between the city and CHA to preserve and expand affordable housing inventory amid ongoing housing affordability challenges.
Under CHA’s long-term plan, all 79 residential units will gradually transition into deeply affordable housing serving low- and moderate-income households.
“This acquisition transforms signature historic buildings in the heart of Cambridge into affordable homes for families,” said Clara Fraden, Chief Executive Officer of the Cambridge Housing Authority. “We need more affordable places in our community where families can settle, raise children, put down roots and stay long term. This purchase creates opportunities to make that possible.”
Fraden said the authority plans to work closely with existing residents and neighborhood stakeholders during the transition process as the buildings are integrated into CHA’s housing portfolio.
“We are deeply grateful to the City and the Cambridge Affordable Housing Trust for their partnership,” she said. “We look forward to working with current residents and neighbors as we bring these buildings into CHA’s portfolio and make them home for families and individuals who otherwise could not afford to live in Cambridge.”
City housing officials described the acquisition as an important investment in preserving socioeconomic diversity in Cambridge, particularly in neighborhoods with strong transit access, educational opportunities and economic resources.
“This acquisition represents a crucial step in promoting long-term affordability in Cambridge at a time when housing pressures are especially acute,” said Cambridge Housing Director Chris Cotter. “The acquisition of this property will bring new affordable units into the city’s stock in a neighborhood rich with opportunity.”
Cotter added that both the city and CHA remain committed to ensuring a collaborative transition process for residents and the surrounding community.
“Together, we are working to ensure that Cambridge remains a diverse and inclusive city for years to come,” he said.
The Massachusetts Avenue properties are located near public transit, retail corridors and major employment and educational centers, making them a strategically significant addition to the city’s affordable housing inventory.
