Recognition from the International District Energy Association highlights expansion of Vicinity’s thermal energy network and commitment to decarbonization.

BOSTON — Vicinity Energy, the nation’s largest owner and operator of district energy systems, has been recognized with a Gold Award from the International District Energy Association (IDEA) for the continued growth of its district energy network serving Boston and Cambridge.

The award honors Vicinity for achieving significant milestones in both the amount of area committed and total square footage connected to its district energy system. Brian Mueller, Chief Development Officer at Vicinity Energy, accepted the award on behalf of the company during IDEA2026, the association’s 117th Annual Conference & Trade Show, held June 23–26 in Ottawa, Canada.

Recognizing Growth in District Energy

Founded in 1909, IDEA represents nearly 3,000 members across more than 30 countries and serves as a leading organization for professionals involved in district energy, thermal networks, and related infrastructure.

This year’s conference, themed “Connecting Networks,” brought together energy industry leaders to discuss emerging trends in decarbonization, system integration, energy resilience, and the future of thermal energy solutions.

Vicinity also played a role in the conference’s North American industry plenary panel, where Kevin Hagerty, CEO of Vicinity Energy, joined other industry leaders to discuss market trends, decarbonization strategies, and the evolution of integrated energy networks.

Powering Greater Boston Through Innovation

Headquartered in Boston, Vicinity operates one of the largest district energy systems in the United States, providing thermal energy to more than 240 buildings through approximately 29 miles of underground pipe infrastructure throughout Boston and Cambridge.

The company’s network serves some of the region’s most prominent hospitals, universities, commercial buildings, and institutions, providing reliable and resilient heating and cooling solutions while supporting customers’ sustainability objectives.

By connecting multiple buildings to a centralized energy system, district energy helps improve efficiency, reduce emissions, and provide communities with a more resilient approach to managing energy needs.

Advancing a Lower-Carbon Energy Future

Vicinity’s district energy systems help avoid more than 97,000 tons of local carbon emissions annually. The company has also continued to advance building decarbonization through innovative technologies, including its electric-powered boiler at the Kendall facility in Cambridge.

The facility produces eSteam®, a carbon-free thermal energy solution designed to help customers transition toward cleaner energy sources while meeting sustainability goals.

The IDEA Gold Award recognizes the continued expansion of Vicinity’s district energy network and reflects the growing demand for reliable, cost-effective, and lower-carbon energy infrastructure across Boston and Cambridge.
