BOSTON–The Trump administration has listed nine federal properties in Massachusetts for potential sale, including the John F. Kennedy and “Tip” O’Neill office complexes in Boston, as well as the newly constructed Volpe transportation center in Cambridge’s Kendall Square, according to the Boston Business Journal (BBJ).
The U.S. General Services Administration (GSA) recently published a list of hundreds of federal properties nationwide deemed “non-core,” signaling that they could be sold. The GSA’s website notes that these properties are part of an ongoing effort to reduce government costs, an initiative championed by President Donald Trump and Tesla/X owner Elon Musk, who have advocated for significant cuts to federal spending.
The BBJ report cites the GSA’s website, which states that the properties identified are surplus and could be considered for disposal, though the process involves multiple formal steps. However, Trump’s appointee to the Public Buildings Service told Bloomberg that being on the “non-core” list does not guarantee a property will be sold. Instead, he stated that any potential sale would be evaluated if an offer is made.
The Massachusetts properties on the list collectively span more than 2.5 million square feet, with the largest being the 838,000-square-foot Kennedy Federal Building. This property consists of two 26-story towers and a low-rise building next to Boston’s City Hall.
