Renovation and expansion of historic Memorial Dining Hall advances school’s Vision 2032 strategic plan

DANVERS, MA — St. John’s Prep has officially broken ground on the Memorial Student Commons, a $27.5 million renovation and expansion project that will transform one of the school’s most historic campus buildings and serve as a key component of its Vision 2032 strategic plan.

School leaders, trustees, project partners, donors, alumni, and community supporters gathered on June 4 to mark the start of construction on the project, which will reimagine Memorial Dining Hall as a modern campus hub while preserving its historic significance.

Attendees at the ceremony included Head of School Dr. Edward P. Hardiman, Board Chair Thomas P. Riley, members of the Board of Trustees, representatives from project partners PROCON, Flansburgh Architects, and Scalora Consulting Group, as well as representatives from Salem Five Bank and SAGE Dining Services. The event also included a blessing by Deacon Joseph Jasinski, a St. John’s Prep alumnus.

Originally constructed in 1926, Memorial Dining Hall has served as a central gathering place for generations of students. The groundbreaking coincides with the building’s centennial year, adding historical significance to the project as the school prepares the facility for future generations.

The Memorial Student Commons is intended to become a central hub for student life and community engagement on campus. Plans call for expanded kitchen and food service facilities, flexible gathering and programming spaces, a dedicated dining area for faculty and staff, and the relocation of Student Life offices to the building.

School officials said the project aligns with the broader goals of Vision 2032, a long-term strategic initiative focused on enhancing the student experience and strengthening community connections.

“The Memorial Student Commons represents our commitment to creating spaces that strengthen relationships and support the formation of young men,” Hardiman said during the ceremony. “For nearly 100 years, Memorial Dining Hall has been a gathering place for our community. This transformation honors that legacy while creating a vibrant center where students can connect with one another.”

The project team includes Flansburgh Architects as lead designer, PROCON as construction manager, and Scalora Consulting Group serving as owner’s representative. Salem Five Bank is providing financing for the project, while SAGE Dining Services is collaborating with the school on dining operations and facility planning.

Michael Yeatman, Chief Construction Officer at PROCON, said the project balances preservation of the school’s history with the needs of future students.

“PROCON is proud to serve as construction manager for the Memorial Student Commons, a project that honors St. John’s Prep’s century-long legacy while creating a dynamic space for the next generation of students,” Yeatman said.

Construction is expected to continue throughout the 2026-2027 academic year. The Memorial Student Commons is scheduled to open in August 2027, ahead of the start of the 2027-2028 school year.

Founded in 1907, St. John’s Prep is an independent Catholic school for boys in grades 6 through 12. School leaders say the new student commons will play a central role in supporting student engagement, mentorship, and community-building as the institution continues to implement its long-term strategic vision.
