BOSTON — IFMA Boston will host a behind-the-scenes tour of the Museum of Science’s Blue Wing redevelopment project on June 1, offering attendees an inside look at the creation of the museum’s new Public Science Common along the Charles River.

The event, scheduled from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m., will explore the transformation of part of the museum’s Blue Wing into a flexible civic gathering space designed for public programs, educational events, and community engagement. The new Public Science Common will feature 270-degree views of Boston and Cambridge and accommodate between 300 and 700 attendees through the use of retractable seating and movable partitions.

Organizers said the tour will highlight several of the project’s key architectural, engineering, and sustainability features, including construction logistics associated with building on a dam within an active river environment and the implementation of double-skin curtainwall technology.

Participants will also learn about efforts to modernize the museum’s 1970s-era Brutalist structure to improve accessibility, including the integration of universal restrooms and updated circulation systems designed to create a more inclusive public space.

Additional discussion topics will include resiliency and sustainability planning related to the project’s location at the headwaters of the Charles River.

The evening will begin with registration and light refreshments from 5:30 to 6:15 p.m., followed by a discussion and guided tour from 6:15 to 7 p.m. Coffee and networking will conclude the event.

Because the site remains under active construction, attendees must wear closed-toe shoes and comply with all safety requirements. Photography may be restricted in certain areas, and participants should expect extended periods of walking and standing.

Tickets are free for IFMA Boston members and $75 for non-member guests.

The Museum of Science is located at 1 Science Park in Boston, adjacent to the MBTA Green Line’s Science Park station. Parking is available at the museum’s parking garage.
