ASHLAND, Mass.— Ebbrell Architecture + Design has completed the interior design of Core Cove, a new boutique fitness and wellness studio located within a mixed-use development at 12 Pond Street in Ashland.
The project transformed a raw commercial shell space into a thoughtfully designed wellness destination that balances functionality, aesthetics, and operational efficiency. The new studio adds to the growing collection of businesses and community amenities within the development while providing a welcoming environment for fitness, recovery, and wellness services.
Core Cove was founded by Belsy Gonzalez, owner of a medical spa in nearby Sherborn, who envisioned a wellness studio that would appeal to clients of all fitness levels.
“I wanted Core Cove to feel welcoming and comfortable, not intimidating,” said Gonzalez.
Working closely with Gonzalez, Ebbrell Architecture + Design developed an interior that reflects the studio’s wellness-focused brand while maximizing the potential of its compact footprint. According to project designer Lauren Foley, NCIDQ, LEED GA, the collaborative process began with a series of vision boards that helped translate the owner’s ideas into a functional design strategy.
“The owner has a strong sense of her brand and therefore made quick decisions,” said Foley. “It was a really fun collaboration to take her vision and translate it into something literal.”
The design team focused on creating a seamless client experience from arrival through workout and recovery. Careful space planning supports efficient circulation throughout the studio while maintaining privacy in changing and wellness areas. The layout also addresses practical operational needs, including check-in functions, retail displays, seasonal storage considerations, and smooth transitions between fitness and recovery spaces.
Lighting played a central role in shaping the atmosphere of the studio.
“Lighting has a huge impact on how people perceive and experience a space,” Foley said. “For Core Cove, it was important that the lighting feel balanced and consistent, and that every detail work together to create a calm and soothing environment.”
The interior incorporates warm materials, softened architectural elements, and carefully selected finishes that create an upscale aesthetic without relying on costly luxury materials. Features such as arch-top mirrors and subtle design details contribute to an environment intended to feel both elevated and approachable.
One of the project’s defining architectural features is a series of three operable garage doors that flood the studio with natural light and allow for open-air fitness classes. Privacy film applied to the glazing helps maintain discretion while creating what the design team describes as a “jewel box” presence visible from the street.
In addition to the studio’s visual design, Ebbrell Architecture + Design assisted with project coordination, accessibility requirements, and building code compliance, helping streamline the development process for the first-time studio owner.
“This was my first time working with an architect,” said Gonzalez. “Lauren and the Ebbrell team took my ideas, my budget, and my images and made them realistic. They managed details I would never have thought of. They were incredibly professional and made the process seamless. They did great work.”
For Miika Ebbrell, AIA, LEED AP, principal of Ebbrell Architecture + Design, the project demonstrates how design can support both business goals and customer experience.
“Core Cove is a strong example of how design supports business strategy,” said Ebbrell. “Belsy had a clear vision for the client experience, and Lauren translated that into a space that is efficient, buildable, welcoming, and prepared to serve the business well for years to come.”
As boutique fitness and wellness concepts continue to expand throughout suburban communities, projects like Core Cove highlight the growing importance of thoughtful tenant fit-outs that not only reflect a brand’s identity but also support long-term operational success and customer engagement.
