BOSTON–Simpson Gumpertz & Heger (SGH) announced that Nick Wetzel has joined the firm as a Project Director in its Structural Engineering Division in Southern California.
In this role, Wetzel will strengthen SGH’s design capabilities for aerospace infrastructure and specialty structures while further bolstering the firm’s seismic engineering expertise. He will collaborate closely with SGH colleagues and clients across the United States and around the world.
Wetzel brings deep experience managing and delivering complex aerospace projects from early concept through construction. He has led multidisciplinary architectural, structural, and civil teams in the design of new launch complexes and rocket testing facilities, as well as the retrofit of mission-critical infrastructure. His project portfolio includes new and existing steel and concrete systems, large hangars and support buildings, and highly specialized equipment and pipe support structures. He has also overseen fast-tracked assessment, upgrade, and repair efforts, along with the design and retrofit of critical facilities before and after major seismic events.
“It is great to be back at SGH and to help build on the firm’s reputation for solving challenging engineering problems,” said Wetzel. “I am excited to partner with our many experts across the firm to deliver creative and responsive solutions for our clients.”
Wetzel began his career at SGH, spending nearly a decade in the firm’s San Francisco Bay Area office before relocating to California’s Central Coast. Known for his strong communication skills, collaborative approach, and leadership, he applies sound engineering judgment to manage technically complex projects, adapt to evolving project requirements, and deliver tailored solutions. He is also committed to mentoring junior staff and supporting their professional development.
In addition to his project work, Wetzel actively contributes to the engineering profession. He has shared his expertise through teaching experiences at California Polytechnic State University, San Luis Obispo, and through professional involvement with the American Society of Civil Engineers 7-16 Seismic Task Committee and Base Isolation and Energy Dissipation Subcommittee, the Structural Engineers Association of Northern California, and the American Institute of Steel Construction.
Wetzel is a registered Professional Engineer and holds both a master’s and bachelor’s degree in civil engineering from Cal Poly San Luis Obispo.
