BOSTON — Engineering firm Syska Hennessy Group has appointed Matthew Mayerhofer, LEED AP, CEM, as supervising commissioning agent. He is based in the Boston office.

Mayerhofer, who has nearly 20 years of experience in design, commissioning, and sustainability, will oversee the growth of the local commissioning team and expand business opportunities for MEP, facility assessments, energy audits, and commissioning-related work. Such work, which involves understanding of systems operations, testing, and verification of mechanical, electrical, and plumbing systems, has become a critical component of engineering projects, especially for those with ambitious targets for decarbonization and energy efficiency in renovated or existing buildings.

Previously, Mayerhofer served as a senior infrastructure and sustainability engineer at Tripadvisor. Early in his career he worked at WSP as an HVAC designer and subsequently as a commissioning project manager. His project portfolio includes Tripadvisor’s global headquarters in Needham, Massachusetts; infrastructure projects at UMASS Amherst, Babson College, and Worcester State College; commissioning for UMASS medical schools; upgrades to ORs at UMASS Memorial Clinton Hospital and New England Baptist Hospital; the U.S. Mint building in Washington, D.C.; the National Museum of African American History and Culture in Washington, D.C.; Boston’s Logan Airport; and JPMorgan Chase bank branches in Massachusetts.

“Syska already has a strong commissioning practice nationally, so Matthew will focus on developing our local expertise,” says Andrew Krenning, associate managing director of the Boston office. “The ‘on-site’ presence of sustainability and commissioning professionals will make it easier for us to staff and manage our projects throughout the New England region.”

A resident of Massachusetts, Mayerhofer earned a B.S. in mechanical engineering from Union College in Schenectady, New York.
