CAMBRIDGE, MA— Votze Butler Associates (VBA) has completed a five-phase, 30,000-square-foot renovation at Mitsubishi Electric Research Laboratories (MERL), transforming MERL’s Cambridge headquarters into a more collaborative, efficient, and employee-focused environment.

Led by Senior Project Manager Paulo Ramalhinho, the project was delivered over five months while MERL employees remained on site — requiring strategic phasing, detailed logistics, and close coordination with all stakeholders. The renovation included full upgrades to labs, conference rooms, shared workspaces, and employee amenities, with a strong emphasis on flexibility and hybrid work support.

“It had been a decade since our last renovation, and employee needs had changed,” said Anthony Vetro, President and CEO of MERL. “VBA helped us create a space that is not only more functional but also welcoming and inspiring for our team.”

Project Highlights:

  • Nine specialized labs rebuilt to accommodate MERL’s evolving research priorities
  • Custom systems integration, including HVAC, fire protection, and electrical tailored for high-performance R&D
  • Modern finishes and millwork throughout, delivering a clean, contemporary aesthetic
  • Reimagined common areas, including a redesigned cafeteria and reception area
  • New furnishings, including height-adjustable desks and coordinated move management
  • Glazing and drywall upgrades to improve natural light and spatial flow

“This was one of the most complex projects I’ve worked on,” said Ramalhinho. “We were moving teams in and out of active spaces while rebuilding them entirely. It required tight communication and constant planning.”

Employee feedback has been overwhelmingly positive, with the new cafeteria becoming a favorite gathering spot and the refreshed lobby offering an impressive welcome for visitors.

“They’ve built us a space that will serve us well over the coming years,” added Vetro. “VBA’s professionalism and attention to detail continue to impress.”

The project builds on a long-standing relationship between MERL and VBA, highlighting the firm’s expertise in delivering high-quality renovations in live, research-intensive environments.
