MILLBURY, Mass. — Worcester Business Journal reported that The Shops at Blackstone Valley is planning a major expansion with two new buildings totaling about 35,000 square feet of additional retail, dining, and wellness space.
According to WBJ, the new buildings will be constructed in the parking lot area of the open-air retail center at 70 Worcester-Providence Turnpike. The project is being developed by WS Development, which is based in Chestnut Hill.
WBJ reported that the two buildings will house approximately 10 tenants, including a mix of retailers, restaurants, and wellness providers. Base construction is expected to be completed by mid-2026.
“The Shops at Blackstone Valley continues to evolve as a destination that reflects how our community shops, dines, and spends time together,” Eric Smookler, vice chairman and co-chief information officer of WS Development, said in a press release, according to WBJ.
Among the announced tenants are Sweetgreen, Shake Shack, and LaserAway, WBJ reported.
Across the street from the expansion, the center is also set to welcome a location of Yard House, marking the restaurant’s first site in Central Massachusetts, according to WBJ.
“With the addition of these new offerings, we’re expanding our roster while enhancing the overall guest experience through exciting retail, exceptional dining, and thoughtfully designed spaces,” Smookler said, according to WBJ.
WBJ reported that the project will also include new walkways, landscaping, and electric vehicle charging stations. The charging infrastructure will be installed through a partnership with Electrify America, a Virginia-based provider.
The expansion comes amid continued leasing activity at the Millbury retail center. According to WBJ, Warby Parker opened its 13th Massachusetts location at the center in May 2024. WBJ also reported that Apple announced in November that it plans to relocate from the Solomon Pond Mall to The Shops at Blackstone Valley, while Avvio Ristorante revealed plans in January to open a new location at the plaza this summer.
The additions are expected to further expand the retail and dining options at one of Central Massachusetts’ busiest shopping destinations, according to WBJ.
