BOSTON – Shawmut Design and Construction hosted a topping-off ceremony on Tuesday, June 4th for The Shed at DivcoWest’s Cambridge Crossing.
The 43-acre, 4.5 million-square-foot mixed-use development will consist of 11 acres of open and green space, 2.1 million square feet of state-of-the-art science and technology space, neighborhood retail, and 2,400 residential units, alongside 2,500 existing units, all at the intersection of Cambridge, Somerville, and Boston. This is the first topping-off ceremony of four separate projects Shawmut is constructing throughout the Cambridge Crossing development.
Designed to foster community connections and to be a gathering place, The Shed is a stand-alone retail building centrally located at the heart of Cambridge Crossing and is surrounded by The Common, which Shawmut is also constructing.

Tom Sullivan, President of Development, DivcoWest; Tim Hurdelbrink, Director of Construction Operations, Shawmut; Matt Galloway, Superintendent, Shawmut; James Roberts, Project Manager, Shawmut; Mark Johnson, Director of Development, DivcoWest; Jason Ray, Safety Manager, Shawmut.
The Shed consists of two buildings connected overhead with a glass canopy that will cover an outdoor plaza.
Designed by Prellwitz Chilinski Associates, The Shed will encompass a consistent theme of transparency and connectedness — using metal, glass, and cedar to seamlessly blend together the built environment with surrounding green and open spaces that will include a waterway with granite blocks (reused from the 150-year old seawall excavated at the site), a picnic grove with grills available to the public, and outdoor games like bocce ball.

The opening of The Shed also marks the first dining experiences at Cambridge Crossing. By Q1 2020, Puritan & Co. Chef and Owner Will Gilson will expand his presence to the all-new building at Cambridge Crossing with creative, flexible spaces comprised of an all-day café, full-service restaurant, and cocktail bar with a rooftop terrace overlooking The Common.
