WORCESTER, MA — A new state-of-the-art materials science lab is set to open in downtown Worcester, marking another major step in the city’s rapidly expanding innovation ecosystem.

The facility, known as the Flexcon Lab at Auxilium, is being developed through a partnership between Auxilium Worcester, Flexcon, and 44 Maple Group. Located at 311 Main Street, the lab will add 3,000 square feet of specialized space designed to support early-stage technology companies working in materials science.

The project aims to address a critical shortage of accessible lab space for startups in Massachusetts, providing both advanced testing equipment and on-site technical expertise. The lab will be staffed by experienced technicians and process engineers, offering startups the resources needed to move innovations from concept to commercial viability.

Auxilium Worcester, founded in 2025 and backed by Rucker Investments, provides startups with capital, mentorship, and operational support. The addition of the Flexcon Lab is expected to significantly enhance its capabilities, including the launch of a dedicated materials science accelerator cohort.

Executive Director Zachary Dutton said the new facility will help attract startups from across the country by offering real-world environments for testing and development, combined with direct access to industry experts.

The initiative comes amid growing recognition of Worcester as an emerging hub for innovation. Recent national reports have ranked the city among the top mid-sized metros for STEM jobs and highlighted its expanding life sciences talent base. State leaders have also invested in the region’s growth, including funding for the Central Massachusetts BioHub to further strengthen the local ecosystem.

Flexcon, part of 44 Maple Group, will play a key role in providing technical support and expertise, while the lab will also house the Tech Solutions Group, a division of 44 Maple Group.

Neil McDonough, Executive Chair of 44 Maple Group, said the collaboration reflects a shared commitment to fostering innovation and opportunity within the community. He emphasized that the lab represents not just a physical space, but a long-term investment in local entrepreneurship and economic growth.

Since its launch, Auxilium has already introduced multiple accelerator programs, including a recent partnership with the Massachusetts Biomedical Initiatives to offer a joint life sciences cohort, with applications currently underway.

Construction of the new lab is in progress, with a grand opening anticipated in summer 2026. Once complete, the Flexcon Lab at Auxilium is expected to play a key role in advancing Worcester’s position as a center for innovation, research, and startup development in New England.
