BOSTON– MUJI, a Japanese lifestyle brand, has opened a 13,500+ square-foot retail location at 48 Brattle Street in Harvard Square, Cambridge, Massachusetts, following a lease facilitated by Bulfinch and Newmark.
The multi-level store officially launched in time for the holiday shopping season, marking an expansion for MUJI in the Greater Boston market.
The Harvard Square location offers a curated assortment of homeware, apparel, accessories, and lifestyle products, alongside services and experiences designed to elevate the customer visit. The store embraces MUJI’s signature “frameless” design concept, featuring floor-to-ceiling glass windows that connect the interior with the bustling street, reflecting architect Ben Thompson’s 1969 vision of blending merchandise, space, and urban life.
“Our goal has always been to create spaces that feel welcoming and inclusive, where people can explore our thoughtfully designed products that enhance everyday life,” said Richard Rappaport, President of MUJI USA. “This store is not just about retail; it’s about fostering a sense of connection, inspiration, and community right in the heart of Cambridge.”
The 88,000-square-foot building at 44–48 Brattle Street sits at the center of Harvard Square, adjacent to cultural institutions, shopping, dining, and public transit, including direct access to the Harvard Square MBTA Red Line Station, local bus routes, and Commuter Rail connections. The location also provides prominent signage and branding opportunities, making it a prime destination for retail and pedestrian traffic.
“We’re excited to bring a global brand like MUJI to the heart of Harvard Square,” said Michael Wilcox, Managing Director, Leasing at Bulfinch. “This location offers exceptional visibility and access in one of Greater Boston’s most dynamic and historic retail destinations, further enhancing the energy and vibrancy of the Square.”
Bulfinch, representing the building ownership, worked with Newmark’s retail brokerage team led by Matt Curtin, Greg Covey, and Alden Bush, while MUJI was represented by Boston Realty Advisors.
With over five decades of experience in Harvard Square, Bulfinch continues to attract high-profile retail and office tenants. Current leasing opportunities include 95 and 125 Mount Auburn Street, with configurations ranging from 1,000 to 35,500 square feet.
MUJI’s arrival adds a global retail presence to Harvard Square, reinforcing the area’s reputation as a hub of culture, creativity, and commerce.
