BOSTON — Seth Greenberg, one of Boston’s successful restaurant and hospitality professionals, has officially opened Monteverdi at 40 Edward H. Land Boulevard in Cambridge (The Royal Sonesta Boston). Monteverdi is located on the banks of the Charles River, offering one of the most intimate river views in all of Cambridge and Boston.

Monteverdi features both traditional and contemporary Italian dishes with cutting-edge cocktails and a carefully selected wine list. Given Greenberg’s long involvement in the Boston nightlife scene, Monteverdi is expected to become one of the city’s hottest new dining destinations. Initially, dinner will be served seven days a week, then in the weeks to follow the team will be adding weekend brunch, lunch and an al fresco raw bar, along with other surprises on tap to follow.

ABOUT THE CHEF & MENU

Monteverdi’s talented Chef Christian Ellis worked under Steve Johnson at Rendezvous and Gordan Hamersley of Hamersley’s Bistro for many years. Ellis brings a set of skills and sophistication sure to make Monteverdi a top spot.

Monteverdi features elevated Italian dishes with modern, elegant plating. The dinner menu features fresh pastas including a rigatoni bolognese, linguine vongole, gnocchi and bucatini. The menu also features a variety of other dishes including a bone-in pork milanese, pan roasted salmon, truffle polenta, grilled bistecca, a grilled branzino and a roasted chicken. The roasted chicken is uniquely personal for Ellis as it is inspired by Hammersley’s Bistro. The chicken is topped with a demi-glace and served with roasted cipollini, fondant potatoes, roasted cipollini and fondant potatoes. Other menu items include flatbread pizzas featuring classic Italian cheeses such as mozzarella, ricotta and taleggio on housemade tomato sauce, sophisticated salads and seafood appetizers that complement the incredible outdoor raw bar. The brunch menu features classics such as poached eggs, french toast, pancakes and so much more.

ABOUT THE BEVERAGE PROGRAM

The drink menu has been carefully crafted to match the essence of Monteverdi, classic yet contemporary, while embodying the region that inspired it. The wine list features eclectic wines from around the world, including wines from Australia, France, the U.S. and of course, Italy. Monteverdi also offers a set of classic craft cocktails with a modern twist.

THE TEAM
In addition to Greenberg, the Monteverdi team includes Chef Christian Ellis (The Cottage Wellesley, Ashmont Grill, Centre Street Sanctuary, Rendezvous) and General Manager Jared Hall (Serafina Back Bay, Verb Hotel). The design will be by Greenberg’s longtime designer/collaborator Petra Hausberger of Somerton Park Interiors.

ABOUT THE NAME
Seth grew up in Miami but his late father owned a clothing factory in Italy, 20 minutes outside Venice. When his parents visited Italy, his dad worked, and his mother immersed herself in the culture by enrolling in Italian classes. “Greenberg” roughly translates to Monteverdi (green mountain) in Italian, which earned her the class nickname “Signora Monteverdi.” Monteverdi pays homage to Seth’s mother.

ABOUT THE DESIGN

Design is a major element of Monteverdi with Greenberg’s go-to, award-winning designer Petra Hausberger of Somerton Park Interiors taking on the project. Monteverdi has invoked a decidedly contemporary look and feel with a stylish and relaxed ambience as it overlooks the Charles River. The restaurant’s color palette is inspired by the warm and earthy materials found in Italian architecture and vegetation. The design features a combination of walnut woods and terrazzo porcelain flooring, combined with more vibrant furniture in a rich palette of olive and ochre, which adds an understated warm glamor.

The space features two indoor dining areas, a main dining room and a private dining room. The main dining room includes walnut fluted walls, luxe velvet seating, bronze mirrors and plaster pendants which evoke a space that is both calm and sophisticated. The private dining room includes 20 foot high ceilings and large windows allowing for fabulous river and city views, making it the perfect spot for memorable events. At the bar, Hausberger has created a spot perfect for drinks, dining and people watching. The Calacatta quartz topped bar seats about 20 people and includes additional seating at the long bar banquette directly opposite. The outdoor terrace, one of the most expansive on the entire Charles, offers both dining and lounge seating and boasts gorgeous, unobstructed views of the river, Beacon Hill, and the Boston skyline.

THE BASICS
Monteverdi seats about 220 people total with 54 people in the main dining room, 58 in the private dining room, 20 bar seats,16 in the
lounge, and 86 outdoor patio seats.
