BOSTON – Kaplan Construction, a WBE general contractor and construction management firm providing comprehensive building programs across Greater Boston, announced that it ranked twelfth on the list of the 35 biggest women-owned businesses in Massachusetts.

To be considered for the list, the Massachusetts-based business must be owned at least 51 percent by a woman or women. Previously, the ranking of companies by revenue had been a combined list of minority- and women-owned businesses in Massachusetts. In 2014, Jane Kaplan Peck became the majority owner and chief operating officer (COO) of Kaplan Construction. Since then, the company has grown to $49.5 million in annual revenue and 31 employees.

“According to a recent report on the state of women in construction in 2021, only 13% of construction firms in the U.S. are owned by women so it’s exciting to see three construction firms on the 2022 BBJ list of women-owned businesses,” said Jane. “At Kaplan, nearly one quarter of our employees are women, well above the industry average of 10%. With the workforce shortage being exacerbated by the pandemic, we believe that employing and retaining female workers is more vital than ever for our firm and industry.”

In October 2014, one of Jane’s first undertakings as the newly appointed COO was spearheading the effort to be certified as a Women Business Enterprise (WBE) by the Commonwealth of Massachusetts. WBEs are entities that are at least 51 percent owned and/or controlled by women. Minority Business Enterprises (MBEs) and women owned businesses provide ever increasing value to the Massachusetts economy, making up the state’s fastest growing business sector in the Commonwealth. Kaplan also frequently performs on projects requiring Boston Resident Jobs Policy (BRJP) compliance and has employed a significant number of women and minority-owned subcontractors in doing so.

A respected industry leader, Jane has been named a Women of Finance, Insurance, and Real Estate (FIRE) by Banking New England magazine; an Outstanding Woman of Family Business by The Warren Group; Emerging Leader of the Year by the Associated General Contractors Massachusetts Chapter (AGC MA) in its first ever BWiC Inspire Awards; and a Women in Construction by the editorial board at Constructech Magazine.

Kaplan’s services include preconstruction, general contracting, construction management, and design/build. Recent projects include Trust Early Learners in Brookline, the Edgerley Family Horizons Center in Roxbury, Castle Island Brewery in South Boston, and CALA in Somerville.
