Quincy, MA — Integrated Builders has completed a 20,000-square-foot expansion at the Hale Family YMCA in Quincy, delivering a major enhancement to the South Shore YMCA’s ability to serve the community through health, wellness, and youth development programming.
The expansion introduces several new, purpose-built spaces, headlined by a state-of-the-art Gymnastics Training Center that brings youth gymnastics programming to Quincy for the first time. Designed to support athletes of varying ages and skill levels, the center features in-ground trampolines, tumble tracks, oversized competition-style spring floors, loose-foam pits for soft landings, multiple bar stations, and a range of balance beams, including floor beams and dedicated pit areas for dismount training.
In addition to the gymnastics facility, the project includes Studio D, a large-scale group exercise and wellness studio, and The Phyllis Godwin Empowerment Center, a dedicated space created to support programs that help girls and women connect, learn, and thrive.
The design/build addition was constructed as a separate structure adjacent to the existing YMCA building. A two-hour fire separation wall and a four-inch expansion joint allow the two buildings to move independently, ensuring long-term structural performance. Given the site’s challenging peat-like soils, construction began with extensive ground stabilization efforts. These included compaction grouting to strengthen weak soils, as well as the installation of rammed aggregate piers (stone columns) to reinforce soft organic silts and peat, transfer loads to more stable bearing layers below, and minimize settlement. Three sediment monitoring pipes were also installed to track water and soil movement over time. To help control project costs, Integrated Builders utilized a pre-engineered steel structural system.
“Working with Integrated Builders is not simply hiring a general contractor. It is working with a true partner who was as interested in making our visions and dreams come to life as we were,” said Trevor Williams, President and CEO of the South Shore YMCA.
Integrated Builders collaborated closely with the South Shore YMCA and the broader project team to ensure that design and construction decisions aligned with the organization’s mission, schedule, and operational needs. “We always love working for the Y,” said Jay Dacey, CEO of Integrated Builders. “They’re a great group to work with, and we appreciate the efforts of DJSA Architecture, Quieto Consulting Engineers, Kelly Engineering, and the City of Quincy for helping move this project forward.”
Through proactive planning and ongoing coordination, the team focused on delivering spaces that support daily programming, enhance community impact, and provide long-term functionality for YMCA staff, members, and families.
