MALDEN, MA — The not-for-profit Volunteers of America Massachusetts held the Grand Opening of its $30 million complete renovation of the historic McFadden Manor Nursing Home at 341 Forest Street in Malden, MA into a state-of-the-art senior living residence.

The site has a rich history in Malden, serving as the city’s “Poor Farm” prior to its life as a nursing home. As part of the historic rehab, the original farmhouse on the property was also renovated preserving key architectural details.

The new senior community features 3 independent senior apartments, 60 assisted living apartments, and 18 apartments in the Compass Memory Support NeighborhoodⓇ.

Tom Bierbaum, President/CEO of Volunteers of America Massachusetts who officiated at the Grand Opening said, “There are a lot of families looking for senior housing with the type of quality care and services we provide. Within a 5-mile radius of this building, there are almost 300,000 people living in the Malden/Melrose area. So we saw this as an excellent location in terms of the market that’s out there.”

Volunteers of America worked with the city of Malden over a five year period to complete this project with support and leadership from Mayor Gary Christenson, State Representative Paul Donato, Deborah Burke from the Malden Redevelopment Authority, Steve Finn from the Malden Housing Authority, and Ward 5 City Councilor Barbara Murphy.

Financing for the project came through Eastern Bank, with support from East Boston Savings Bank. Home Depot provided a substantial donation to build an outdoor garden area with raised planting beds, and the Malden Public Library donated books to stock the shelves of the community’s library.

A team with extensive experience in senior housing collaborated on the project, including Alan Zimliki, Principal of ASZ Associates, The Architectural Team of Chelsea, NEI General Contracting of Randolph, and Meridian Associates of Beverly.

The community is managed by Senior Living Residences (SLR), a New England regional management firm with a 25-year history of successfully bringing assisted living projects to financial success. SLR has opened, staffed, leased and managed over 30 independent and assisted living communities, and is currently operating 18 communities with a portfolio value of more than $200 million and over 1500 employees.

Priority applications are now being accepted for residency at Forestdale Park. For more information, contact Director of Community Relations Terri Guenard at 781-333-8903 or [email protected].
