Boston– Seaport has partnered with art production powerhouse Creos to unveil two dynamic visual art installations, solidifying the district’s reputation as best in class for public art.
The first of these exhibits, Loop, will be in the One Seaport Courtyard, from January 11th through February 17th, and is comprised of six illuminated, moving cylinders which – when operated almost like railway hand-cars – play music and animations.
The second exhibit, Prismatica, will be located along Seaport Boulevard and in Seaport Common from February 9th through April 1st and encompasses 25 tall, rotating prisms reflecting color and light, day into night. These playful, interactive pieces join Air Sea Land, the series of kaleidoscopic sculptures by renowned artist Okuda San Miguel, currently punctuating Seaport Boulevard, and follow last winter’s supremely popular Seaport x Impulse, which was comprised of illuminating and sound producing seesaws. Loop and Prismatica are further enhanced by The Igloos at Lookout Rooftop, which have returned to The Envoy Hotel for their third winter, and new, visual graphics taking over the Seaport’s pop-up retail space, The Current, as it transitions to its new, soon-to-be-announced theme.

Loop is sure to spark children’s imagination and revive adults’ childhood memories. This original installation consists of 6 giant cylinders that combine the functionality of music boxes, railway hand-cars, and zeotropes, or optical toys that were a forerunner of animated film. The illuminated musical installation features a distinctive retro-futuristic look.
Members of the public are invited to sit within the cylinders and activate the mechanism with a lever, causing beautiful images inspired by fairy tales to come to life. When the cylinder starts spinning, it lights up, making the series of still images appear to move. A flickering strobe effect accompanies the black and white images, reminiscent of old movies. The animation is visible from inside or outside the cylinder and can be viewed from up close or far away. The speed at which the images move, the frequency of the flickering, and the tempo of the music are determined by how fast participants move the lever.

Comprised of 25 pivoting prisms more than 6.5 feet tall, Prismatica will transform Seaport into a colorful winter wonderland. Each piece’s panels are laminated with a dichronic film that transmits and reflects every color in the visible spectrum, varying with the position of the light source and the observer. As visitors manipulate the prisms, they will enjoy an infinite interplay of lights and colorful reflections. A variable-intensity soundtrack comprised of bell sounds plays in harmony with the movements.

Bringing the Seaport’s light experience to vertical heights are The Igloos at Lookout Rooftop, back for their third year. Here guests can enjoy seasonal cocktails from within a heated, neon igloo, overlooking Boston Harbor. This season’s hot cocktails include This OTT To Be Good, Snuggle Juice and Feeling Frisky. Other not to be missed favorites are Cider Sangria and Brian’s Barrel Aged cocktail.
