GROTON, MA – Studio G Arichitects announced the completion of the new Florence Roche Elementary School (FRES) in Groton, MA. This transformative new 110,000-square-foot facility is now open and ready to serve 645 students, from Kindergarten through Grade 4, with an environment built to foster modern, flexible, and inclusive learning.
Studio G worked collaboratively with the Town of Groton, the Groton-Dunstable Regional School District, Leftfield Project Management serving as owner’s project manager, and Gilbane as construction manager. The design reflects the district’s exciting educational modality, Universal Design for Learning, while leveraging the unique opportunities presented by the site.
“Completing Florence Roche Elementary School marks a significant achievement for both Studio G and the Groton community,” said Gail Sullivan, Managing Partner at Studio G Architects. “This project was driven by a vision to create a space that adapts to the needs of today’s learners while also providing flexibility for future educational goals. Our close collaboration with the Groton-Dunstable Regional School District, teachers, students, and the broader community has resulted in a dynamic, sustainable, and student-centered school.”
FRES is designed with the principles of Universal Design for Learning (UDL), a framework that recognizes and supports diverse learning styles. The school’s design creates a personalized, intimate environment for young students, with the building organized into grade-level “learning neighborhoods.” This layout promotes a sense of community and helps make the school feel welcoming and approachable.
“Each learning neighborhood is equipped with shared project areas, specialized pull-out spaces, and integrated special education supports,” said Marylee Mercy, Project Architect and Accredited Learning Environment Planner at Studio G Architects. “This approach fosters engagement, collaboration, and diverse expression, ensuring that all students can learn in a way that works best for them.”
The school organization promotes flexibility, collaboration, and engagement, fostering an environment where every student can thrive. The incorporation of Universal Design for Learning principles underscores Studio G Architects’ commitment to creating an environment where every student can succeed, aligning with the evolving landscape of educational philosophy and practice.
“It’s been incredibly rewarding to see this project come to life and know that this school will provide an innovative and lasting educational space for generations of students,” said Steve Michener, Associate at Studio G Architects. “We are honored to have been part of this journey with the Groton-Dunstable Regional School District, and we look forward to seeing the positive impact this new facility will have on the community.”
With the completion of Florence Roche Elementary School, Studio G Architects continues its dedication to designing spaces that enrich communities, nurture future generations, and support educational excellence.
