BOSTON – Nitsch Engineering of Boston has been honored with a National Recognition Award in the American Council of Engineering Companies’ (ACEC) 58th annual Engineering Excellence Awards (EEA).

The firm received the accolade for its groundbreaking work in developing the Green Infrastructure Handbooks for the Boston Water and Sewer Commission, a project aimed at enhancing stormwater management and climate resilience in Boston.

The handbooks, a key resource for property owners and developers, offer detailed guidance on implementing and maintaining green infrastructure solutions to mitigate urban stormwater challenges. The Planning and Design Handbook, first published in 2021, provides technical guidance, strategies, and a toolkit for integrating green infrastructure into new and existing developments. Its companion, the Operations and Maintenance (O&M) Handbook, released in 2024, offers detailed maintenance protocols, illustrated instructions, and inspection checklists to ensure long-term functionality of these sustainable systems.

Nitsch Engineering’s work is particularly significant given Boston’s unique infrastructure constraints. With limited publicly owned land for large-scale stormwater solutions, the Boston Water and Sewer Commission sought to inspire private property owners to incorporate green infrastructure into their projects. The handbooks serve as a crucial step toward that goal, equipping stakeholders with practical solutions for sustainable urban water management.

The recognition places Nitsch Engineering among the top engineering firms nationwide competing for additional honors in the ACEC awards program, often referred to as the “Academy Awards of the engineering industry.” The awards recognize projects for their uniqueness, technical innovation, social and economic benefits, and overall impact on the profession.

The winners, including recipients of the Grand Conceptor Award—the competition’s highest honor—will be celebrated at the EEA Gala on May 20, 2025, at the Grand Hyatt in Washington, D.C.

ACEC, the national business association representing over 5,200 independent engineering firms and more than 600,000 professionals, has been a leader in promoting engineering excellence since its founding in 1906. The organization’s annual Engineering Excellence Awards highlight the critical role engineers play in advancing infrastructure, environmental sustainability, and economic development across the U.S.

For Nitsch Engineering, this recognition reinforces its reputation as a leader in sustainable infrastructure solutions. With expertise in civil, transportation, and structural engineering, as well as land surveying, planning, and GIS services, the firm continues to drive innovation in the field of green infrastructure and resilience planning.
