Auburn, ME — Harriman, an architecture and engineering firm based in Maine with offices across New England, has announced the promotion of Daniel E. Backman, AIA, LEED AP, NCARB, to the role of principal.
Backman brings nearly 20 years of experience in architectural design, with a focus on higher education institutions in California and New England. Since joining Harriman in 2021, he has significantly influenced the firm’s higher education portfolio, contributing to the creation of dynamic, student-centered environments that foster collaboration and innovation.

Known for his ability to unite stakeholders and guide projects through multifaceted challenges, Backman has been instrumental in aligning Harriman’s design strategies with the evolving needs of colleges and universities.
In his new role, Backman joins Harriman’s leadership team alongside existing principals Mark Lee, AIA, LEED AP; James Fortin, PE; Lisa Sawin, AIA, NCARB, LEED AP BD+C; David Story, PE, LEED AP; and Mark Burnes, AIA, NCARB.
