NORWOOD, MA – GZA GeoEnvironmental, Inc. (GZA), a multi-disciplinary firm providing geotechnical, environmental, ecological, water, and construction management services, announced that Senior Principal Emeritus Lawrence Feldman, Ph.D., has been selected by NAIOP Massachusetts, the Commercial Real Estate Development Association, to receive its 2023 Government Affairs Champion Award.

NAIOP praised Dr. Feldman’s “tremendous contributions to NAIOP’s advocacy” as a longtime member of NAIOP’s Brownfields Redevelopment Committee. Also honored with the Government Affairs Champion Award were Ned Abelson, an environmental attorney and director at the law firm of Goulston & Storrs, and Sherry Clancy, National Development’s Senior Vice President, Development.

NAIOP CEO Tamara Small said: “Since the passage of the Brownfields Act in 1998, Ned, Sherry, and Larry have worked tirelessly to ensure regulations, policies, and laws are in place that support the cleanup and redevelopment of contaminated sites in Massachusetts. Their technical expertise and input have allowed NAIOP to serve as the voice of the industry on these critical issues. Massachusetts is a national leader in the redevelopment of brownfields thanks to their work. NAIOP is grateful for their leadership.”

GZA President and CEO Patrick Sheehan said: “All of us at GZA are delighted to see Larry’s four decades of leadership in the Massachusetts real estate industry and hazardous waste site cleanup profession recognized with this prestigious Government Affairs Champion Award from NAIOP, an industry-leading commercial real estate association. Larry’s work to help the real estate industry complete projects that grow the economy, create jobs, and remediate properties–while protecting human health and the environment–epitomizes GZA’s commitment to working with clients to solve complex challenges in natural and built environments.”

Dr. Feldman is currently serving as a Senior Consultant to the company.  He was among the first group of consultants to become Licensed Site Professionals in 1993, and since then has overseen the assessment and remediation of hundreds of Massachusetts oil and hazardous waste sites and has provided litigation support in cases involving such sites. He has served as co-chair, with Mr. Abelson, of the NAIOP Brownfields Redevelopment Committee and is still an active member.

A 44-year veteran of GZA, Dr. Feldman holds a Ph.D. in Geology from Boston University. He previously served on the Massachusetts LSP Board of Registration, is a founder and past President of the LSP Association, and he serves as an appointee to the Massachusetts Department of Environmental Protection (MassDEP) Hazardous Waste Site Cleanup Advisory Committee.
