Tom Andrews of Alexandria Real Estate Named President of NAIOP Massachusetts and Jessica Hughes of Tishman Speyer as President-Elect

NEEDHAN, MA—NAIOP Massachusetts has a new leadership for 2021. Tom Andrews of Alexandria Real Estate Equities takes over the new president of NAIOP, replacing Leslie Cohen of Samuels & Associates whose term expired this year. Jessica Hughes of Tishman Speyer has been named President-Elect.

NAIOP held its annual meeting virtually where the Massachusetts Chapter named its 2021 Board Management Committee, led by Chair (and 2020 President) Cohen and President Andrews.

Joining Cohen and Andrews on the Committee are Past Chairs Douglass Karp of New England Development, Ed Marsteiner of National Development and Sara Cassidy of AEW Capital Management, as well as President-Elect Jessica Hughes of Tishman Speyer, Treasurer Patrick McMahon of Federal Realty Investment Trust, and Secretary Kirk Sykes of Accordia Partners.

William Kane of BioMed Realty, Katy O’Neil of Suffolk Construction Company, and David Madan of Boston Investments joined the Board with terms expiring in 2023. James F. Carlin of Crosspoint Associates, Dennis Clarke of Cummings Properties, Abby Goldenfarb of Trinity Financial, Bryan Koop of Boston Properties, Maura Moffatt of Synergy Investments, Chad Remis of Oxford Properties Group, Kimberly Sherman Stamler of Related Beal, and James Tierney of JLL were all reappointed for three year terms.

Mr. Andrews is Co-President and Regional Market Director of Greater Boston at Alexandria Real Estate Equities, Inc. In these roles, Mr. Andrews focuses on the company’s overall strategic operations and leads its Greater Boston asset base and operations. He has been Regional Market Director of Greater Boston, with increasing responsibility related to the role, since joining Alexandria in 1999.

With 30 years of experience in the commercial real estate industry, he has a proven track record and leading reputation within the real estate, life science, and technology communities. During his 20-year tenure at Alexandria, Mr. Andrews has steered the transformative growth of Greater Boston into the company’s largest region, which is home to three of Alexandria’s most prominent life science and technology campuses—Alexandria Technology Square, Alexandria Center at Kendall Square, and Alexandria Center at One Kendall Square—in the heart of Cambridge. As Regional Market Director of Greater Boston, Mr. Andrews has led the strategic acquisition of multiple value-added properties; diligently managed on-time, on-budget development projects; and cultivated and maintained key tenant relationships. He has also built and continues to guide with operational excellence a highly skilled team across a range of disciplines.

Prior to Alexandria, Mr. Andrews worked at the Massachusetts Biotechnology Research Park in Worcester, Massachusetts, from 1988 to 1999, serving first as Assistant Director and later as Executive Director. The Massachusetts Biotechnology Research Park is believed to be the first purpose-built biotechnology research park in the country.

Mr. Andrews serves on the boards of the Massachusetts chapter of NAIOP Commercial Real Estate Development Association and the Kendall Square Association and is a member of the Economic Development Advisory Group of Massachusetts Biotechnology Council (MassBio).

He received his Bachelor of Science degree from Cornell University and his Master of Science in Real Estate Development degree from the Center for Real Estate at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology.

Ms. Hughes joined Tishman Speyer in 2018 and is currently responsible for the company’s operations in the Boston region including acquisitions, dispositions, asset management, and development.

She joined Tishman Speyer from JLL, where she was a Managing Director in the Boston Capital Markets group and member of JLL’s International Capital Group. Previously, she was a Senior Vice President at Beacon Capital Partners, responsible for acquisitions and dispositions in major US markets, as well as establishing Beacon’s offshore offices in London and Paris.

Ms. Hughes has a BA in History from Dartmouth College. She serves as a board member at the Boston Center for the Arts.
