BOSTON– John W. Gahan III, a partner in Sullivan & Worcester LLP’s Real Estate Department, has been selected to receive a National Housing & Rehabilitation Association (NH&RA) Affordable Housing Vision Award.

Gahan and a second recipient, Boston Housing Authority’s William McGonagle, will receive their awards at the group’s annual Fall Developers Forum on October 23 at the Harvard Club of Boston.

The Vision Award is presented annually by NH&RA to recognize individuals for long-term stewardship and expansion of affordable housing opportunities for low income families across the country.

“Whether working for housing developers, sitting on a zoning board involved in regulating responsible growth and development within a community, or serving on boards of local institutions, I have been fortunate to have had opportunities to devote my energy and professional training to endeavors that foster the success and health of communities,” Gahan said. “I am humbled to receive this award from NH&RA, which is home to countless thinkers, doers and visionaries with the shared goal of making our communities better by developing decent affordable housing and preserving community assets.”

For several decades, Gahan has concentrated his practice on multifamily housing acquisition, financing, development and management, generally representing developers of multifamily housing projects involving state and federal Low Income Housing Tax Credits, “Brownfields” credits and historic credits, and state and federal subsidy programs. He has assisted in drafting key laws and legislation, including Chapter 40T, the landmark Massachusetts housing preservation law and continues to provide recommendations on the implementation of Chapter 40T as a member of the advisory committee. Gahan has served on the NH&RA Board of Directors since 2010 and is also on the Board of Directors and Executive Committee of Preservation Massachusetts.

At Sullivan & Worcester, Gahan’s in-depth knowledge of affordable housing development has been a key benefit to the firm’s clients. He is a member of the firm’s Affordable Housing Practice and a valued contributor its Opportunity Zones practice group.
