NEW BEDFORD, MA–Global Learning Charter Public School (GLCPS), a tuition-free public charter school that currently services 500 students in grades 5-12, announced a new lease with the Diocese of Fall River to create a state-of-the-art STEAM campus in New Bedford.

The 25-year lease includes a 5-year extension option. The new lease includes both the current main campus building located at 190 Ashley Boulevard and the addition of the adjacent former St. Anthony’s convent building located at 106 Bullard Street in New Bedford.

The lease and renovation of the historic building located in the Near North End Neighborhood in New Bedford will expand classroom capacity and increase the innovative curriculum. The expanded classroom space will feature science labs, dedicated art and music space, foreign language classrooms, multi-use classrooms and teacher and community collaboration space. The renovation will also include necessary upgrades to bring the building up to code.

Prior to the 2019-2020 school year, GLCPS was split between two campuses, approximately 2 miles apart, creating a travel interruption during the school day for high school students that split their time between both campuses. With the new lease in place GLCPS will embark on a campaign to renovate and upgrade the facility creating “One School, One Campus.”

“We are excited to embark on this journey and continue to help our students prepare for their future, become contributing members of the 21st global society and continue to build community partnerships to support the South Coast region of Massachusetts,” said Dr. Stephen Furtado, Executive Director. “GLCPS is driven by technology and innovative curriculum. The One School, One Campus renovation project will create a fully integrated Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, and Math (STEAM) space for students, staff, and the local community.”

Open to New Bedford residents, Global Learning Charter Public School (GLCPS) is a tuition-free public charter school that currently serves 500 students in grades 5-12. Launched in 2002 as a Horace Mann charter school, GLCPS became a Commonwealth charter school in 2006. In order to generate a culture of personalization, the school setting and class sizes are deliberately small.
