Four Industry Veterans to Speak at 11th Annual Boston Senior Housing Facilities Summit on Sept. 16

WALTHAM, MA–Boston Real Estate Times, the region’s integrated online, print and video real estate magazine, announced that four industry veterans will speak at its 11th Annual Boston Senior Housing Facilities Summit on Sept. 16, 2021.

The summit will also honor Senior Living Residences CEO Robert Larkin for his outstanding contributions to the industry.

In addition to Mr. Larkin, other speakers at the summit are: James Coughlin, Co-Founder and CEO, Northbridge Companies;  Michael Gordon, Senior Vice President of Acquisitions and Development, EPOCH Senior Living; and Brian Doherty, President and CEO, Massachusetts Assisted Living Association.

The 11th Senior Housing Facilities Summit is organized by the Boston Real Estate Times, which has hosted this summit for the last 11 years. The Sept. 16th summit will be held virtually due to ongoing concerns about COVID-19. The event will start on Zoom at 9:30 AM and conclude at 11:00 AM.

Speakers

Robert Larkin

Robert Larkin

Mr. Larkin started Senior Living Residences (SLR) in 1990, developing one of the first assisted living communities in Massachusetts. He is a leading authority on the design, development and operation of independent senior housing, assisted living, and Alzheimer’s care communities across multiple states, with specific expertise in not-for-profit community operations, and tax-credit and tax-exempt financed projects.

A pioneer and catalyst for assisted living in Massachusetts, Mr. Larkin worked with government officials to draft the legislation and regulations establishing and governing the industry in the state. He was among the original founders/members of the Massachusetts Assisted Living Association (MassALA) and served in numerous leadership roles for the organization, representing and advocating for the industry before various regulatory and legislative forums.

Under Mr. Larkin’s leadership, over the past 30 years SLR developed a proven track record in the development and management of over 40 projects. The company is known for rapid lease-up in new projects, stabilized occupancy rates consistently averaging in the high 90’s across SLR’s portfolio, and cost-effective operations management bringing developments to a position of maximum financial strength.

Prior to entering the assisted living industry, Mr. Larkin worked in real estate development and syndication. He also served in state government as Director of the Massachusetts Securities Division, as Massachusetts Deputy Secretary of State, and as an elected representative in the Massachusetts Legislature. Mr. Larkin received his BA from Boston College and law degree from Suffolk University.

James Coughlin

James Coughlin

Mr. Coughlin is the co-founder, CEO and CIO of The Northbridge Companies. As a serial entrepreneur, he has founded and lead multiple companies over the past 30 years. Prior to co-founding Northbridge in 2004, Mr. Coughlin served as a partner and senior executive in a senior housing start up. He was instrumental as Director of Acquisitions and Capital Markets, growing the platform from a single asset to 27 communities prior to its successful sale to a national operator.

As CEO of Northbridge, Mr. Coughlin has driven the growth of the company earning the recognition by INC Magazine’s Top 5000 fastest growing companies in 2017, 2018 and 2019 respectively. From inception, the company has grown from a single business unit focused on the development of senior housing, to a vertically integrated senior housing platform. The platform now includes a dedicated advisory company providing critical operational, financial and marketing expertise to REIT’s, private equity investors, banks and other operators, a development company that has successfully developed over 15 communities in New England, a senior housing management company with over 1,500 employees, and an asset management company that oversees the senior housing investments on behalf of family offices, institutions, pension funds and individuals. To date the organization has completed over $1 billion in transactions.

Mr. Coughlin serves on Beth Israel Lahey Health Hospital – Needham board, serving on its real estate, philanthropy, and strategic planning sub-committees. He also is the chair of Massachusetts Assisted Living Associations’ foundation. Additional board positions include, Lord Hobo Brewing Company and Valterra Partners, a private equity platform that specializes in providing growth capital to start ups.

Michael Gordon

Mr. Gordon is responsible for all market research related functions, including real estate/site selection analysis and market feasibility at EPOCH. He has a lead role in identifying and evaluating markets and sites for new developments and potential acquisition opportunities.  In addition, his duties include, but are not limited to, conducting economic feasibility due diligence related to acquisition and development opportunities. This includes market demand analysis, financial modeling and valuations. Mr. Gordon has over 25 years of senior housing and post-acute care industry experience.

Mr. Gordon joined EPOCH in 1998 as Director of Reimbursement. In 2002, he was promoted to Vice President of Planning and Development was responsible for the company’s acquisition and development efforts under the supervision of the company’s President and CEO.  Mr. Gordon was subsequently promoted to SVP of Acquisitions and Development in January 2020.

Prior to joining EPOCH in 1998, Mr. Gordon was the Director of Reimbursement for Prism Health Group, a long-term care company that specialized in providing rehabilitation, nursing home management and home care services.  He holds a BA from the University of California at Berkeley and a MBA from Bryant College.

Brian Doherty

AS the CEO of Massachusetts Assisted Living Association, known as Mass-ALA, Mr. Doherty leads the assisted living organization. Mass-ALA is a not-for-profit organization, dedicated to professionally operated assisted living residences in Massachusetts that provide housing and services for individuals with varied needs and income levels.

Mr. Doherty joined Mass-ALA as CEO in 2018. Previously, he served as Executive Director Massachusetts Psychological Association and CEO Northeast Association of Realtors.

The summit will focus on challenges and opportunities face by the Senior and Assisted Living industry in the face of the current pandemic, including rising healthcare costs, an ageing population, increased longevity and the state of demand for senior living facilities.

Other topics include: How does 2021 and beyond look like for assisted living, senior housing and health rehabilitation centers in the context of the current pandemic? Despite the demand, why has occupancy fell or remained flat and why have construction starts been lower than expected in recent years? How has COVID-19 affected the industry and what should the industry do to deal with future pandemics?
