Boston Society of Architects Announces Winners of 2017 Design Awards at its Annual Gala

BOSTON—The Boston Society of Architects/AIA announced the winners of 2017 design awards at its annual gala that was held on Thursday. More than 400 people attended the event.

The awards were given Housing Design, Unbuilt Architecture and Design, Honor Awards for Design Excellence, the Harleston Parker Medal and the People’s Choice Award, selected among the Harleston Parker Medal finalists.

The sole criterion was design excellence, BSA said in a statement. Other considerations by the jury included addressing of social values climate; creative solutions in the face of complex urban conditions; use of intelligent restrain; and the execution of concept at all scales of a project.

Other award types, given to individuals by their peers, included BSA Award of Honor Medal, the Earl R. Flansburgh Young Architects Award,  the BSA Commonwealth Award, and BSA Honorary Membership.

Harleston Parker Medal

This year’s recipient of the 2017 Harleston Parker Medal is the Boston Public Library, Johnson Building Transformation, designed by William Rawn Associates, Architects for the Boston Public Library.

People’s Choice Award

This year’s winner is the Boston Public Library, Johnson Building Transformation, designed by William Rawn Associates, Architects for the Boston Public Library.

BSA Award of Honor

Henry N. Cobb FAIA

Harry’s six-decade-long career with Pei Cobb Freed & Partners has made a lasting impact on the architectural design of buildings of all types—cultural, institutional, civic, and commercial—and the built fabric of countless cities. His contributions to Greater Boston alone are significant: the John Joseph Moakley United States Courthouse and Harborpark; Harbor Towers; Harvard’s Center for Government and International Studies; 30 Dalton and One Dalton now rising in the Back Bay; and the most recognizable structure of Boston’s 20th-century skyline, the John Hancock Tower (now known as 200 Clarendon Street). In addition to his built works, Harry has contributed to the design community through his service on institutional boards and multiple teaching appointments, including a five-year term (1980–85) as chair of the Department of Architecture at the Harvard Graduate School of Design.

Earl R. Flansburgh Young Architects Award

Co-sponsored by the Flansburgh family, the 2017 winner is Joshua Simoneau AIA, Urban Designer and Architect at Beyer Blinder Belle.

BSA’s Commonwealth Award

This year’s recipient is Vivien Li Hon. BSA, President and Chief Executive Officer at Riverlife and former President of The Boston Harbor Association (now known as Boston Harbor Now).

BSA Honorary Member

This year’s recipient is Matthew Kiefer Hon. BSA, Director at Goulston & Storrs.

Established in 1867, the Boston Society of Architects today consists of nearly 4,000 members and produces content for an array of programs and publications, including ArchitectureBoston Expo (ABX) and ArchitectureBoston magazine. A chapter of the American Institute of Architects, the BSA is a nonprofit, professional-service organization.

Each year the BSA, often in collaboration with other organizations, sponsors award programs to honor design excellence in Massachusetts, throughout New England, and elsewhere. Awards Definition

Honor Awards: the highest awards. These projects are the “best of the best.” Each one elevated the hearts and minds of our juries by expressing both technical and aesthetic design excellence.

Awards: admirable and innovative work that is successfully executed from concept through construction.

Citations: those projects that caught the jury’s eye for design, technical, humanitarian, or other reasons.

Harleston Parker Medal

The Harleston Parker Medal award was established in 1921 by J. Harleston Parker in memory of his father. The first award was granted by the BSA in 1923. The intent of the award is to acknowledge the “single most beautiful building or other structure” built in the metropolitan Boson area in the past 10 years. The award is co-sponsored by the City of Boston.

People’s Choice Award

An online competition organized by the BSA where members of the public go head-to-head with the 2017 Harleston Parker Medal jury to decide which among this year’s finalists is the most beautiful new building in the Boston.

BSA Award of Honor

This honor is given to individuals whose lifetime contributions to the profession and to the BSA have been uncommonly profound.

Earl R. Flansburgh Young Architects Award

This award recognizes design excellence by an architect under 40. The award is named for Earl R. Flansburgh FAIA, a distinguished Boston architect who generously supported emerging professionals and advocated for women architects. This award is co-sponsored by the Flansburgh Family.

BSA Commonwealth Award

The purpose of this award is to recognize an outstanding influence on Boston’s built environment or the community’s awareness of it.

BSA Honorary Membership

The purpose of this award is to honor an individual whose contributions to the Boston design community are of outstanding significance and value.
