BOSTON—Nine newly elected city leaders from Boston, Cambridge, Watertown, Melrose and Salem have been selected to participate in the UrbanPlan Public Leadership Institute (UPPLI). This initiative from ULI Boston/New England, is designed to educate municipal leaders and inform the decisions they make regarding real estate development and land use.

This powerful learning session will be held on Thursday, April 6, 2018 from 9:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. at the offices of Stantec, 311 Summer Street, Boston.

Participants include: Boston City Councilor Lydia Edwards, Boston City Councilor Ed Flynn, Cambridge City Councilor Allana Mallon, Cambridge City Councilor Sumbul Siddiqui, Cambridge City Councilor Quinton Zondervan, Salem Councilor-at-Large Domingo Dominguez, Salem City Councilor Lisa Peterson, Melrose Alderman-at-Large Manisha Bewtra, and Watertown Councilor-at-Large Caroline Bays.

“Housing and land use issues resonate deeply in Boston, where thousands of residents struggle with high rents and opportunities for homeownership, which builds intergenerational wealth,” said Boston City Councilor Lydia Edwards.

“Watertown, along with the entire Boston area, is experiencing a crisis around housing and development,” said Watertown Councilor-at-Large Caroline Bays. “I am attending Urban Plan Public Leadership Institute because it will strengthen my understanding of housing and development issues and broaden my knowledge of the potential solutions available to our town.”

ULI Boston/New England will provide all leadership institute participants with a one-year, complimentary membership, which gives them access to ULI programming and professional development opportunities.

“Solutions to the region’s housing affordability challenges will be conceived and achieved through collaboration between both the public and private sectors,” said Maura Moffatt, District Council Chair of ULI Boston/New England and Managing Director of Investments at Synergy Investments. “UPPLI gives land use professionals the chance to work with newly elected leaders to think critically about what it takes to create and sustain thriving communities in the Commonwealth for all residents.”
