BOSTON–The Massachusetts Coalition for Occupational Safety & Health (MassCOSH), extends its deepest condolences to the family of the construction worker who died of injuries sustained on the job this past September 3rd while working around a crane that was being disassembled.

MasscoshThis death marks the fifth worker to be killed on the job while working with cranes in Massachusetts in the past five years.

Although little is known regarding the exact cause of the tragedy and the Occupational Safety and Health Administration has just begun its investigation, employers have the responsibility to ensure that all workers assigned to disassembling cranes receive training on safe disassembling procedures for the specific crane they are disassembling and that these procedures follow the manufacturer’s guidelines.

“MassCOSH is truly saddened that a holiday created to celebrate working people has been marred by the needless death of a construction worker,” said MassCOSH Executive Director Marcy Goldstein-Gelb. “This latest loss is a sad reminder of how much more work must be done to create a future where everyone can return home from work healthy and whole every day – a future MassCOSH is working hard to reach.”
